MISTAKES TO AVOID

The images below are taken from projects I've visited in my sale and consulting roles. They show the kind of mistakes and challenges I commonly see in the design and construction of rooftop decks. The mistakes are the work of professional contractors, many of whom are decent craftsmen in other trades. Their errors are due to one or more combination of:

  1. Ignorance about how to work with pedestal decking systems

  2. Purchasing the wrong pedestal components and quantities

  3. Not having the accessory materials on-hand to properly resolve common challenges

  4. Running behind on time and going for quick fixes

Seeing such frequent mistakes on rooftops is what propelled me to start my own deck building company years ago. It's also what now drives my desire to teach others what I know. A rooftop deck is a big investment that consumes a lot of high-value materials. When I come across one that's poorly built, I just find it wasteful and sad – because it's going to end up in the landfill before long.

But, remember, it's not just

the deck. These mistakes can

endanger the roof itself and that's

a more serious problem.

My job is to help you avoid all

such troubles in building a deck

you'll be proud of for decades.
