DECK REPAIR & TUNE-UP

Fixing problems

Poorly installed decks tend to get worse over time. Slack in the deck system invites movement. Movement begets more movement and the deck starts to unravel. As pavers shift and rock, the gaps between become inconsistent. It's annoying and unattractive, especially if you own the deck.

Sometimes the problems can be substantially improved with a creative tune-up that involves supplementary shimming and stabilizing. Sometimes portions of the deck must be rebuilt. Depending on the quality of the existing materials and construction methods, a failing deck may need to be completely demolished and replaced.

I'm happy to take a look at your circumstances and give my assessment of the gravity of the problem and the range of solutions.

VIDEO CHAT / PHONE

Working remotely by computer and phone, we can together take a close look at photos of your deck, its materials and problems. Combining some show-and-tell with photos and drawings should move us toward potential solutions.

If I'm unable to spend time on your rooftop myself, then we'll need to have a capable person who can work under my guidance until he or she feels comfortable on his or her own.

ON-SITE DECK WORK

For projects in the Seattle region, I'm available for in-person visits to your job site. For more distant projects, let's talk about what's feasible. A brief visit may be enough to troubleshoot and resolve a particular difficulty.

If the repair/tune-up is quite limited in scope, I may be available to do the work myself. If not, then I can work with an individual or crew that will do the work, adjusting my level of support according to the builder's competency and the complexity of the project.

WHEN HELP IS NEEDED

No question, the utility lines pictured here posed a real challenge to the installer. But the various workarounds are just wrong, wrong, wrong!

The deck was completed with pedestals set in the manner shown, but began to fail almost immediately. That's fortunate because the load-bearing pedestals would have likely damaged some utility lines in short order. The original effort was a total waste of time and had to be completely re-done using unique accessory materials and methods.
